The US Department of Transportation announced on Monday that it was opening a website that allows internet access to all US cities without internet service for the first time in years.
The website, charters.gov, allows people to access their city’s internet for free for 24 hours.
The move comes as the US government grapples with a severe internet outage that affected more than 40 million people.
The outage, which began last Friday, was caused by an attack on the US Department and Veterans Affairs.
The attack shut down internet access for several states.
The attacks on Veterans Affairs and the Department of Homeland Security prompted President Donald Trump to declare a state of emergency and declare martial law in the US.
Since the attack, the White House has said it is looking into whether to declare an “emergency” and to increase the number of troops in the country to help contain the problem.
